One you drop. One you take instead.
In three lines:
3. A mega-B won't give you energy if you're already replete.
2. Pyridoxine (B6) gets stacked across the B-complex, the magnesium, the zinc and the pre-workout. That's how Australians have been reporting neuropathy to the TGA.
1. Park the shotgun. Take B12 only if you're vegan, over 50 or confirmed low, not another mega-B.
OUT — shotgun B, “adrenal”, energy shots
“Adrenal” is a marketing word. B vitamins are cofactors in energy metabolism. That's biochemistry, not a fatigue drug. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS) says B12 is sold as an energy enhancer; it does not improve performance if you're not deficient.
Water-soluble doesn't mean a megadose is harmless. High B6 from food hasn't been shown to wreck nerves. Chronic supplemental pyridoxine can.
Don't collapse Australia's B6 numbers into one “UL 50 mg”:
NHMRC nutrient UL (2006, still the published UL): 50 mg/day.
TGA listed-product cap (from 1 March 2023): 100 mg/day per product (cut from 200). Neuropathy warning if the daily dose is above 10 mg. That's 10 milligrams, not 10 micrograms.
Scheduling from 1 June 2027: ≤50 mg stays general sale; >50–200 mg is pharmacist-only; >200 mg remains prescription. TGA says risk cannot be excluded below 50 mg, especially when products are stacked. There were 250 DAEN neuropathy-class reports to 31 October 2025.
The US UL is 100 mg. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) UL is 12 mg. NHMRC has a draft of 14 mg in consultation to 30 September 2026. That draft isn't law yet. Print the fight. Don't pretend there's one global number.
The Chemist Warehouse trick is to stack bottles that don't say “B vitamin” on the front.
Blackmores Mega B Complex: 41.1 mg B6 (from 50 mg hydrochloride) + 50 mcg B12 + 300 mcg folic acid. One tablet is already 82% of the AU UL. It contains nicotinamide, not nicotinic acid, so you will not get a niacin flush from this bottle.
Blackmores Super Magnesium+: 50 mg B6 in a magnesium tablet. It hits the UL without looking like a B.
Blackmores Bio Zinc: 41.1 mg B6 next to 25 mg zinc.
Take one of each, all labelled one-a-day: 132.2 mg B6. That's 2.6× the Australian UL, from energy + cramp + immunity.
The symptoms are tingling, burning and numbness, usually in hands and feet. ODS says they usually stop if you cease as soon as they appear. healthdirect says recovery can take months to years, and some people never fully recover. Both can be true. Don't print “permanently damages nerves” as a certainty. Don't keep taking B6 because the tingling “must be a deficiency.” The TGA has already said toxicity can mimic deficiency.
Folate in a mega-B can correct the anaemia of B12 deficiency while the nerve damage continues. That's another reason not to shotgun folate + B6 + a splash of B12.
If you bought them for fatigue, park the mega-B, the “stress” complex, the magnesium+B6, the zinc+B6 and the energy shot. Keep a prenatal. Keep prescribed B6 (isoniazid) and prescribed B12 injections.
IN — B12 only if vegan, over 50, or already low
Plant foods don't naturally contain B12. If you eat little or no animal food, use fortified food or a B12-only tablet. That's the IN, not a mega-B.
If you're over 50: the Institute of Medicine (IOM) line is that 10–30% of older people may not absorb food-bound B12 well because of atrophic gastritis / low stomach acid. That doesn't mean “10–30% have pernicious anaemia.” Pernicious anaemia (no intrinsic factor) is a smaller subset and needs medical treatment, usually intramuscular hydroxocobalamin for life. Don't diagnose it from this email.
B12-only bottles are often 500–1,000 mcg against an adult RDI of 2.4 mcg because crystalline B12 absorbs poorly at high doses: about 2% at 500 mcg and 1.3% at 1,000 mcg. That's pharmacology, not a licence to take 400× of every other B. NIH has not shown methylcobalamin is better than cyanocobalamin.
If the GP wants a test first, start with serum B12 and add MMA if the number is grey. Then use a B12-only product (Nature’s Own 1000 mcg is a named cyanocobalamin with no B6), or injections if they say so.
Don't swap one mega-B for another mega-B. Don't swap in a “methyl” stack.
ASK (take this to the GP)
“I'm taking a B-complex / energy product / magnesium or zinc tablet for fatigue. Can we check my B12 and make sure I'm not stacking too much B6, rather than leaving me on a shotgun tablet?”
If you already have unexplained tingling, burning or numbness, that's this week, not a newsletter. Take the bottles with you.
This swap is not for you if
You have pernicious anaemia or are on prescribed IM / high-dose oral B12. Keep it. Never park it.
You take metformin, a long-term PPI, or you're post-gastrectomy / bariatric / Crohn’s ileum. B12 risk is real. The GP owns the test and the route. Don't park those medicines.
If you're pregnant, leave the prenatal. Folate is neural-tube prevention, not adrenal support.
You take isoniazid. Low-dose pyridoxine is indicated. Don't park prescribed B6.
If you already have unexplained paraesthesia and a B-stack in the cupboard, see your GP this week. It could be B6 toxicity or B12 deficiency, or neither.
If you're vegan and not getting B12, the OUT is the shotgun, not the B12. Unfortified food isn't enough.
